Training Costs
The costs for training in the DMG have proven themselves to be rather prohibitive for characters, especially between levels four to eight or so. At 1500gp/new level/week, many characters end up finding themselves with either debts or not enough funds to train up to their full potential of levels.
This means in practice that they then need to earn more funds in order to train. Whilst that can be a plot device and a motivation for a character to adventure further, albeit a very crude one, we tend to feel it rather unsatisfactory. The system needed an overhaul.
As such we have devised a new system that seems more financially reasonable. The formula we use is (new lvl ^2) x 100 up to level 10, and then an extra 1000gp/lvl/week beyond that.
We still use the DMG system of the number of weeks training being dependent upon the number of alignment or other character misdemeanours as judged by the DM.
Note that characters with more than one class need to pay for and do training for each class separately, e.g. an illusionist/thief training up to level 2/2 would need to finish training up in one class before training up in the other, in this case the total training taking a minimum of two weeks and costing a minimum of 800gp. Assuming the character were training up to 2/3 and had committed no misdemeanours, the time would be three weeks and the cost 1700gp.
